About the Role

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) is responsible for protecting and managing South Africa’s natural resources. We are seeking two dedicated professionals to join our team as Assistant Directors. In this role, you will help manage national forestry research strategies, coordinate funding, and work with international and local research bodies to advance forestry technology.

Requirements

  • Education: A National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Forestry or a related field.
  • Experience: At least three years of experience in forestry or a related field.
  • Legal Knowledge: Familiarity with the National Forest Act, the National Veld and Forest Fire Act, and the National Environmental Management Act.
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of silviculture, forest ecology, pest and disease management, and forest economics.
  • Skills: Proficiency in computer software, research methods, project management, and strategic planning. You should be an effective communicator and a strong leader.
  • Travel: A valid driver’s license is required, as the role involves driving.
  • Assessments: Shortlisted candidates will complete a practical exercise and an integrity assessment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the review and implementation of the national forestry research strategy.
  • Secure funding for research projects and track investment trends in the industry.
  • Lead and organize National Forest Research and Development forums.
  • Manage the department’s relationship with research institutes such as SAIF, TPCP, ICFR, and the ARC.
  • Assess the impact of new technologies and research findings on the forestry sector.
  • Encourage partnerships and co-funding between the government and the private sector.
  • Represent South Africa in international forestry forums (such as FAO and IUFRO) and handle bilateral forestry agreements.
