Assistant Director: Households Livelihoods (Greening and Livelihoods Implementation Support)

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) is responsible for protecting and conserving South Africa’s natural resources. We are seeking a dedicated professional to join our team in Pretoria to support greening initiatives and community livelihoods.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A National Diploma (NQF6) in Forestry, Natural Sciences, or a related field.
  • At least three years of experience in Forestry or a related environmental field.
  • A valid driver’s license and a willingness to travel.
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation, including the National Forests Act, the National Veld and Forest Fire Act, and NEMA.
  • Understanding of government pro-poor policies, SMME development, and administrative procedures (PFMA and Treasury Regulations).
  • Strong skills in project management, data collection, and analysis.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict-resolution abilities.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete technical and integrity assessments.

Key Responsibilities

Campaign Coordination:

  • Lead the National Arbor Month Campaign and the International Day of Forests.
  • Draft concept notes, collaborate with stakeholders, and organize national events.
  • Manage the National Arbor City Award Competition, including municipal entries and the adjudication process.

Greening & Implementation:

  • Support regional teams with the National Greening Programme.
  • Build partnerships with municipalities, NGOs, and the private sector to implement greening projects.
  • Assist municipalities in developing greening plans and managing tree planting statistics.

Livelihoods & Support:

  • Identify and implement livelihood frameworks to support household-level interventions.
  • Conduct research and draft Terms of Reference (TORs) for new study projects.
  • Monitor and evaluate project outcomes and provide detailed reporting.
