South African National Parks (SANParks) is a world-renowned conservation organization dedicated to protecting South Africa's natural environment, wildlife, and cultural heritage. We are currently seeking a dedicated Assistant Section Ranger to join our team in the Eastern Cape.

Role Overview

The Assistant Section Ranger supports the management of park operations, helps protect the environment, and ensures that conservation policies are followed. This role involves a mix of field work, team supervision, and administrative duties to maintain the integrity of the park.

Key Requirements

  • Education: A National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Nature Conservation, Environmental Management, or Natural Science. A Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7) is an added advantage.
  • Experience: 2 to 4 years of experience in conservation or wildlife management, including at least 1 to 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Skills: Must be computer literate (please provide proof).
  • Licenses: A valid driver’s license (Code 10 preferred).
  • Legal: Must have no criminal record (police clearance will be required).
  • Preferred Qualifications: Firearm competency (Handgun and Self-Loading Rifle) and Grade 2 Environmental Management Inspector status are highly beneficial.

Main Responsibilities

  • Conservation Management: Implement park management plans and ensure all activities follow environmental laws.
  • Law Enforcement: Coordinate patrols, gather information to protect the park, and follow legal procedures when dealing with suspects.
  • Wildlife & Land Care: Assist with game counts, animal capture, and fire management plans to protect biodiversity.
  • Infrastructure Maintenance: Oversee the upkeep of fences, roads, waterholes, tools, and vehicles.
  • Administration: Maintain accurate logs, incident reports, and staff attendance registers. Capture field data electronically.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure all staff and visitors follow safety regulations and health and safety (OHS) requirements.
  • Emergency Response: Participate in search-and-rescue operations and help control alien plant species.
