Job Opportunity: Driver Operator

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) is responsible for protecting and conserving South Africa’s environment and natural resources. We are looking for a dedicated and skilled Driver Operator to join our team in the Eastern Cape.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must meet the following criteria:

• Licensing: A valid Code EC (Code 14) driving license and a valid Public Driver’s Permit (PDP).
• Experience: At least five years of experience driving heavy motor vehicles and operating specialized machinery.
• Technical Skills: Proven ability to operate heavy-duty machines such as graders, TLBs, and fire trucks.
• Personal Attributes: Good communication skills, honesty, and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
• Assessments: Shortlisted candidates will undergo a practical driving test and an integrity assessment.
• Flexibility: Willingness to work long hours when required.
• Basic Skills: Basic computer literacy, document tracking, and professional telephone etiquette.

Key Responsibilities

Your main duties will include:

• Machinery Operation: Operating specialized equipment including graders, TLBs, and fire trucks.
• Road Maintenance: Grading gravel roads, installing pipes, maintaining side drains, and re-gravelling forest paths.
• Transportation: Transporting work teams, equipment, seedlings, timber, and saw logs across the Eastern Cape region.
• Safety & Maintenance: Conducting daily inspections of vehicles and equipment, reporting faults, and performing basic maintenance.
• Emergency Response: Driving firefighting trucks and assisting with fire prevention efforts.
• Administration: Keeping accurate log sheets for all trucks and machinery used.
