Job Opportunity: Manager - Legislative Monitoring and Advocacy

Royal Bafokeng Nation (RBN) is seeking a skilled professional to join our team as the Manager of Legislative Monitoring and Advocacy. This role is based in Phokeng, near Rustenburg, in the North West province.

Role Overview

The successful candidate will be responsible for tracking and analyzing legislative and policy developments that affect the community, specifically regarding land rights, traditional leadership, and cultural heritage. You will develop strategies to advocate for the community’s interests and build strong relationships with government officials and civil society organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze parliamentary debates, new legislation, and policy changes.
  • Prepare detailed briefings and reports for leadership on important legislative matters.
  • Create and implement advocacy strategies to influence policy in favor of the community.
  • Represent the organization at public consultations, parliamentary hearings, and government forums.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with Members of Parliament and government representatives.
  • Facilitate communication between traditional leaders and the government.
  • Draft policy submissions, position papers, legislative proposals, and official correspondence.
  • Provide regular updates and draft speeches for the traditional council and leadership.

Requirements

  • Education: Grade 12 and an NQF Level 8 qualification (Honours degree) in Law (LLB), Political Science, Public Policy, Indigenous Governance, or a related field.
  • Professional Standing: Registration with the Law Society of South Africa or a Master’s degree is considered a significant advantage.
  • Experience: 6 to 8 years of experience in public policy, legislative affairs, or advocacy.
  • Specialized Knowledge: A strong understanding of the South African political and legislative landscape, particularly concerning tribal or indigenous governance.
  • Specific Skills: Experience working within traditional leadership structures is highly desirable.
  • License: A valid Driver’s License is required.
