Position Overview

The ARC-Animal Production (ARC-AP) unit is looking for a skilled, experienced, and motivated Senior Artisan to join our team in Ncera, Eastern Cape. The Agricultural Research Council is South Africa’s leading institution for agricultural research, and this role is vital in supporting our mission of excellence and innovation.

As a Senior Artisan, you will be responsible for maintaining our workshop, managing farm machinery, and ensuring that our infrastructure and equipment remain in top working condition.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintenance & Repairs: Oversee all workshop repairs and ensure tools and equipment are well-maintained.
• Irrigation Systems: Manage and service irrigation infrastructure to ensure efficient operation.
• Fleet & Machinery Management: Supervise the maintenance of vehicles, tractors, and specialized farm machinery.
• Infrastructure Oversight: Conduct regular maintenance on facility buildings and general infrastructure.
• Project & Budget Management: Lead mechanization projects and manage related budgets in coordination with the Centre Manager.
• Safety & Risk: Ensure all workshop activities comply with health and safety regulations.
• Training: Provide technical training to staff regarding the proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.

Requirements

• Education: An N6 in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
• Certification: A valid Trade Test Certificate is required.
• Experience: At least 5 years of hands-on experience in artisan work, including tractor maintenance, mechanical repairs, irrigation systems, and farm equipment.
• Preferred: A Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Agricultural Engineering will be considered a strong advantage.
