Senior Professional Officer - Marine Scientist

The City of Cape Town is looking for a dedicated professional to join our team as a Marine Scientist. As South Africa’s legislative capital and a major economic hub, the City is committed to effective environmental management and the protection of our coastal resources.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need the following qualifications and experience:

  • A relevant 4-year tertiary degree, preferably in Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, or Environmental Science.
  • A Post Graduate Degree or Diploma in Marine Science or Oceanography is an added advantage.
  • Professional registration with SACNASP as a Pr.Sci.Nat.
  • 2 to 5 years of relevant experience following your professional registration, or 2 to 5 years of post-graduate research experience (such as an MSc research thesis).
  • A valid Code B driver’s license.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in coastal management, ocean governance, or public administration is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pollution Management: Lead the coordination and scientific assessment of coastal water pollution. You will manage long-term monitoring programs, provide accurate public reports, and stay updated on global pollution trends to ensure our methods meet international standards.
  • Biodiversity Monitoring: Conduct and report on marine biodiversity monitoring along the Cape Town coastline to help maintain a resilient and healthy marine environment.
