Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Manager to lead our Case Management and Litigation unit. This role focuses on managing labor-related legal matters, ensuring the City is well-represented in court, and providing strategic advice on employment law.

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric certificate.
  • LLB or a Bachelor’s Degree with a major in Labour Law.
  • At least 8 years of managerial experience in labour law, preferably within local government or a similar environment.
  • Deep knowledge of South African legislation.
  • Strong skills in consulting, conflict management, and dispute negotiation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, planning, and problem-solving abilities.
  • A valid driver’s license.

Core Responsibilities

  • Case Management: Develop and oversee a system to handle grievances, disciplinary actions, conciliations, arbitrations, and court litigation.
  • Legal Representation: Represent the City effectively in various labor law forums, tribunals, and courts.
  • Contract Management: Provide expert advice on the employment contracts of Senior Managers.
  • Strategic Support: Offer specialist labor relations guidance to senior leadership and Council members to ensure decisions comply with the law.
  • Operational Leadership: Plan and supervise the activities of the litigation unit to meet the City's strategic goals.
  • Risk and Governance: Implement and manage risk processes and organizational policies.
  • Financial Oversight: Assist in preparing monthly and annual budgets and financial reports for the department.
  • Service Excellence: Ensure all services are delivered professionally and in line with "Batho Pele" principles (putting people first).
